Choose the Right Move

Good
The book content is extreamly good, however the way the book is bound makes it break very easily. If you are patient and good with library tape you will enjoy this book. Based on content alone 5 stars--but with it falling apart on you it's not that great.

Choreography and the Specific Image: Nineteen Essays and a Workbook

a joy to read
I love the latest book! I took it with me on a trip I took in February and read it the entire trip. Three plane rides later, I was still reading in the evenings, and the whole way home. My book is now dog-eared with underlining, corners of pages folded over, etc. It sits on my desk and I open it up for encouragement and inspiration, and share passages with my students. Thank you for a lovely contribution to my world of dance.

Christian Peacemaking: From Heritage to Hope

A Biblical Basis for Peacemaking
Book Review Christian Peacemaking: From Heritage to Hope by Daniel L. Buttry

Buttry, a clergyman of the American Baptist Church has written a most readable and informative book on the nature of Christian peacemaking. Each chapter begins with a personal story in which the author or a family member has been involved in an experience that sets the stage for the subject of the chapter. Rev. Buttry writes not only as an observer of the scene, but as one who has been personally involved in discovering that Christian peacemaking is practical.

Buttry grounds his thesis on the biblical record of the teachings of Jesus and lays out the foundations for nonviolent response to human conflict.

He recounts numerous instances likely unknown to the average person, in which nonviolent responses to conflict have been successfully employed in real-life situations. He relates the well-known struggles of Mahatma Gandhi, Martin Luther King, Nelson Mandela and other luminaries in their respective areas of conflict. He reveals roles played by less well known persons, where the nonviolent approach contributed significantly to successful resolution of the problem.

In all fairness, the author concedes that nonviolence and conflict resolution are not panaceas for dealing with all the ills of a conflicted world. Many heroic efforts fall far short of "living happily ever after". Nevertheless Buttry quotes Bishop Francisco Claver, leader of the nonviolent movement in the Philippines in a statement that seems to summarize his own position: "Active nonviolence is not just a tactic to be used to achieve an end, to be discarded if it does not achieve that end effectively. It is a way of life, an ethic, a spirituality, something that goes beyond the mere utilitarian and practical."

This book is meant for the reader who is willing to consider the possibility that nonviolence based Jesus' teachings may be a superior way to deal with human conflict or to the person who is looking for hard evidence to support the contention that Jesus' way is a practical alternative to violence in this modern era.

A Christmas Romance
Published in Paperback by St Martins Mass Market Paper (November, 1993)
Author: Maggie Daniels

Wonderful, Charming Christmas romance book!
Written by Maggie Daniels who is sometimes credited as Maggie Davis this is a wonderful Christmas romance book that I really loved reading and could not put it down, it is about Julia Stonecypher a widow with two young daughters, she loses her job and they are danger of being evicted from their home by an arrogant bank officer named Gregory Harding but he has an accident and winds up getting snowed in at their house and than the story gets very good and interesting and is a really heartwarming story. It was made into a made for television Christmas movie starring Olivia Newton-John and Grgory Harrison, I taped it when it was shown on TV but haven't watched it yet so I can't say if the movie was good or not but the book was great and probably one of the most charming Christmas romance books I have ever read, It's a shame that it's out of print!

Chronicle of the French Revolution 1788 1799
Published in Hardcover by Chronicle Pubns (April, 1989)
Author: Clifton Daniel

Great for people like me!
Ok, first of all, I'm 13 (almost 14) and I love the French Revolution. Unfortunatly since I'm not as old as most of the dedicated scholars on this subject, I really don't understand a word they write. This book is nice because it has lots of good pictures- anyone doing a report, this is a good book for you!- and it has language that us little people use. It makes sense of all the court scandals and the problems with the bourgeois and aristos. Plus! it gives a discription of the main players in the revolution which is invaluable, at least for me, because most books just expect you to know who Jacques Necker and Princess de Lamballe are, and if everyone expects you to know who they were, how can one find out anything?
So, if you're interested in French history get this book (Or, since it's pretty expensive and out of print, rent it at the library. (if the public library doesn't have it, the university does. but wait! I'm talking to educated peoples here, they'll already know that!)) it's a good investment. :-)

Circa 1492: Art in the Age of Exploration
Published in Hardcover by Yale Univ Pr (October, 1991)
Authors: Jay A. Levenson, National Gallery of Art (U.S.), and Daniel J. Boorstin
Average review score:

An excellent resoruce to the world in 1492.
I recently used Circa 1492 as a reference in preparing lesson plans for several high school units. I found the book to be an excellent resource, filled with information about the world in 1492 that was thought provoking. I recommend the book for anyone who is interested in art and history, multicultural society, and the age of exploration.

Circles, a Mathematical View
Published in Paperback by Dover Pubns (March, 1980)
Author: Daniel Pedoe
Average review score:

As is their nature, circles make a comeback
Although it is the simplest of all nonlinear geometric forms, the circle is far from trivial. It is indeed a pleasure that The Mathematical Association of America chose to reprint an update of this classic first printed in 1957. Geometry teaching has been in retreat for many years in the US and that has been a sad (and very bad) thing. It is also puzzling as so many people say that the reason why they cannot do mathematics (i.e. algebra) is that they need to see something in order to understand it. Furthermore, the first mathematical education that most children receive contains the differentiation of shapes and their different properties.
Circles and lines as used in geometry are abstractions that are easily grasped, much simpler to many than the abstract generalizations of algebra. One can only hope that this book signals a rebirth in interest in geometry education. Without question, it can be used as a text for that education and would help parent a rebirth. To remedy this modern affliction and make the material available to the current readership, a chapter zero was included. This new chapter is used to introduce the background concepts and terminology that could be assumed when is was first published.
No one can truly appreciate the intellectual achievements of the ancients as summarized by Euclid without doing some of the problems. There is also a stark beauty to a form of mathematics where the tools are a compass, straightedge and a mind. Particularly in the age of calculators and computers. All of the basic, ancient results concerning circles are covered as well as some very recent ones. The theorems are well presented and compete without being overdone. In keeping with the ancient traditions, pencil, paper, compass and straightedge are the only tools used. A short collection of solved exercises is also included.
Like the books of Euclid, this work will grow old but never dated. It was destined to be a classic when is was first printed and remains so today.
